<BODY style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; MARGIN: 5px; FONT-FAMILY: gulim; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #fff\"> \"World\'s First\" Gene Treatment Medicine Effect Improved by 10 Fold Completed publication on SCI Journal and Patent Registration [Jan 27, 2010] <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_008839325380806234 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2010-04-20_17-17-42_495.jpg\" target=_blank> Professor Cho, Kyung-hyun explains the effects of the newly developed gene treatment medicine The effects of \'gene treatment medicine\', which is treated as the up-and-coming bio-engineering for treatment of incurable diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, AIDS, rheumatism, and foot ulcers, has been greatly improved by a research team of Korea. Professor Cho, Kyung-hyun (42, photo) of Yeungnam University School of Biotechnology developed the methods to greatly improve the delivery efficiency of the existing \'genetic treatment medicine\' and to sharply lower the financial burden while also enhancing the distribution potential, for the first time in the world. \'Gene treatment medicine\' is a method for supplying genes that have been lost for effectively treating various diseases caused by damaged or missing DNA. Thus, the key is on how outside genes can be effectively delivered to the inside of the cell. Currently, the most widely used method is gene transfer method using an \'adenovirus\', but because it is unstable in room temperature, it has short distribution periods, and its problem with the gene delivery abilities weakened in the blood makes it an obstacle in treating incurable diseases. Thus, Professor Cho used nano bio-technologies to make proteoliposomes with phospholipids and apolipoproteins, covering the adenovirus in order to improve gene delivery efficiency by 10 folds, while doubling the stability, proving it for the first time in the world in vertebrae models. The results of this study that was conducted for three years since 2007 receiving support by the Yeungnam University Aging-associated Vascular Disease Research Center (director, Kim, Jae-ryong) and the Ministry of Knowledge Economy (Minister Choi, Kyung-hwan) and it was published in the January 2010 volume of <Human Gene Therapy>, which is an SCI-level journal in the gene treatment sector. This journal, which received an impact factor of 4.1 in the biology and medical sector, was selected as \"Top 100 influential journals in medicine and biology for the past 100 years\' by the 2009 World Library Association. The results of the research of Professor Cho is expected to greatly contribute to the improved delivery efficiency of adenoviruses, but all other medicine delivery devices and genetic treatment medicines such as RNA inhibitors, plasmid DNA, aptamer, etc. Thus, the research team has registered relevant patents, and is currently negotiating with domestic and foreign gene treatment medicine production companies for technology transfer. In particular, this research is expected to be a period of great development in the recently rising \'bio-similar pharmaceutical industry\'. \'Bio-similar\' refers to reproductive medicines related to protein compounds among pharmaceuticals whose patents have expired. When new medicines are developed, international patents usually last 20-25 years. Most original medicines being worth about 1 billion US $ have their patents expired between 2012 and 2013, and thus many companies are preparing in the competition to develop bio-similars, which are a type of reproductive generic medicine. The market scale is estimated at approximately 30 billion US $. Thus, if the results of this study is used for domestic bio-similar pharmaceutical industry, it is expected to provide epochal improvements in its international competitiveness. Meanwhile, Professor Cho is furthering his studies on genetic treatment medicine that could be used for not only killing cancer cells, but utilizing it as the atherosclerosis and aging models based on this research results.

He proved that fructose changed the structure and functions of key proteins in the blood to cause and promote diabetes, atherosclerosis and aging, and defined its mechanism, he placed his name as the main author on the January 2010 issue of BBRC (Biochemical Biophysical Research Communication), which is an SCI international journal. In particular, by being the world\'s first to define the aging acceleration mechanism of fructose in this thesis, the academic circle is showing high interest. This is because fructose, the sweetest sugar, is used as a sweetener of sodas and fast food and is consumed usually. Accordingly, the research that has been conducted under the support of the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science\'s URP (Undergraduate Research Program) and the Yeungnam University Aging-associated Vascular Disease Research Center since January of last year, resulted in patent pending for development of inhibitors of metabolic syndromes such as aging suppression, diabetes and atherosclerosis. It is very rare for an undergraduate to publish SCI theses. It is even more rare that he placed his name as the main author in the international SCI journal and the results ended up in applying for patents. However, this has happened twice in the research lab of Professor Cho, Kyung-hyun in the School of Biotechnology. Two years ago, as a senior at that time Park, Gi-hoon (24, 2nd batch of MA/PhD integrated course) placed his name as the main author on the thesis that revealed that proteins extracted from Hyphantria cunea could be used as treatment for atherosclerosis in the December 2008 issue of the 2nd most prominent SCI journal, Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology. Park is the co-author of this thesis together with Jang, Wook-joo. The two students stated, \"While conducting research, we learned the danger of sweet tastes.\" They also said, \"It was tough having to work all day long at the lab without any days off, but we were cheered by belief that our research could bring health and happiness to many people,\" and added, \"I hope our belief in our lab will result in better achievements, and hope that our junior students will also publish their works on SCI journals.\" Professor Cho, Kyung-hyun (41), who instructed them, stated, \"Gi-hoon set a good example of diligence coming into the lab at 7:30 everyday to turn the lights on and leaving at 10pm turning the lights off. Wook-joo made his good example and was able to work even harder.\" Cho also added, \"I am happy and grateful to my students who show their ability to surpass me.\"

These groups will spend two or three weeks practicing love without borders. Students who were chosen after strict selection processes such as resumes and interviews under 4 to 1 competition, will live with the local people performing volunteer activities such as working and educating, and is also planning to diffuse Korean culture such as samul-nori, traditional dance, pungmul, Taekwondo and Korean cuisines, which they have been preparing since November. <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_011366077977391664 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2010-04-09_11-13-24_495.jpg\" target=_blank> In particular, Yeungnam University is the third in the nation and the first in provincial area to perform the overseas volunteer activities together with UNESCO, and thus the areas of volunteering was expanded and volunteer programs was diversified. Choi, Jeong-won (24, male, junior in School of Mechanical Engineering), who is the student representative of the 18th overseas volunteer group, and the team leader for Turkey, will be departing on the 20th, and stated, \"Being a volunteer program conducted by UNESCO, it will be an opportunity to gain new experiences and volunteer with people from around the world with different nationality, ages, and social positions.\" He also added, \"I am proud to be able to participate in resolving various international issues not as a Korean, but as a citizen of the world.\" Meanwhile, Yeungnam University has been sending overseas volunteer groups twice a year since 2001, and including this winter break, over 1,500 students will be participating to enhance the image of Korea while acting as civil diplomats. <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_06027363622842458 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2010-04-09_11-13-50_495.jpg\" target=_blank>

<BODY style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; MARGIN: 5px; FONT-FAMILY: gulim; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #fff\"> [Jan 4, 2010] Yeungnam University(president Lee, Hyo-soo) acquired \'ABEEK certification\' for all engineering education programs, and is playing its cards against the difficulties in employment by fostering \'certified engineers\'. Yeungnam University, which became the first in Korea to receive \'ABEEK certification in three engineering schools in November 2001 with the School of Architecture, School of Mechanical Engineering and School of Display and Chemical Engineering, recently acquired ABEEK certification for all 12 engineering education programs. This is a record in the \'Korean\'s greatest number\' of ABEEK certification. Thus, a total of 12 ABEEK certified programs will be offered from this spring: 7 programs in the college of engineering (Civil Engineering, Mechanical System, Mechanical Design, Mechanical Advanced Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Display and Chemical Engineering), 3 programs in the School of Electronic Engineering, Communication Engineering and Computer Science (Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information and Communication Engineering), School of Textiles (Fibers and Nano Materials Engineering) and School of Architecture. In particular, the Mechanical System, Mechanical Design, Display and Chemical Engineering progrmas, which have been offered since 2001, was recognized for its excellence and have already received certification in the NGR evaluation (Next General Review). \'ABEEK certification\' is a certificate given to students who completed engineering education programs according to the education objectives, standards and guidelines set by ‘ABEEK’(Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea, director, Yun, Jong-yong) and is basically a \'quality certification mark\' for engineering education. ABEEK, which was established in 1999 modeled after the ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) of the US, requires the satisfaction of a total of 8 certification standards: program\'s educational objective, program learning performance and evaluation, curriculum area, student, faculty, education environment, education improvement, and standards per field of major. Accordingly, Yeungnam University became the first local university to install the \'Engineering Education Innovation Center\' and reorganized the engineering education composition, improved the education environment, and developed a consumer-oriented curriculum and teaching method to innovate the overall engineering education. In May 2007, on-site investigations for a total of 12 engineering education programs, including the 3 departments in the past, were performed. In addition, by linking the ABEEK certification system with the graduation certification system in 2006, over 700 engineering students received ABEEK certification at the time of their graduation, and from 2010, when the 12 programs will be in full operation, annually 700 students are expected to graduate receiving ABEEK certification. Currently, those who completed the ABEEK certification program are the most popular employment candidate from related companies. In addition, by Korea becoming a member of the Washington Accord from 2007, students who completed ABEEK certification programs are qualified to apply to technician tests in 12 advanced nations including the US, England, Australia, and Canada, and when looking for jobs overseas, they are recognized as having the same educational background with local university graduates. On this, Shim, Jae-jin (52, School of Display and Chemical Engineering), director of the Engineering Education Innovation Center, emphasized its need by stating, \"In order to receive ABEEK certification, it requires much effort and investment such as complete innovation of the existing educational curriculum and teaching method. However, it is a requirement that cannot be delayed. This is because under an engineering education system that graduates students merely fill up their credit units, it is impossible to foster engineers demanded by the society.\" Meanwhile, as of November 2009, there are 275 programs in 41 universities that offer ABEEK certified programs in Korea.

Students majoring in \'Green Energy Association\' at Yeungnam University are guaranteed employment at large conglomerates at the time of their admission. Yeungnam University (president Lee, Hyo-soo) signed an \'industry-academic employment agreement\' with LG Electronics (CEO, Nam, Yong) at the LG Electronics Institute of Technology in the morning of the 17th. With the agreement on the promotion of the industry-academic cooperation education and the employment to foster on-site type engineering human resources, Yeungnam University and LG Electronics organized an \'industry-academic cooperation operation committee\' and agreed to focus on fostering excellent engineering HR through customized education programs. In particular, LG Electronics promised to hire five students majoring in the \'Green Energy Association\' that will be newly established in 2010. On the 26th of last month, an \'industrial-academic employment agreement\' was also concluded with LG Display (CEO Kwon, Yeong-soo) and pledged to hire 15 students every year among those majoring in the \'Green Energy Association\'. Thus, 20 of the 25 student (80%) for the Yeungnam University \'Major of Green Energy Association\' that will be newly created in 2010 will be guaranteed employment in LG Electronics and LG Display immediately after graduating. Lee, Hyo-soo, president of Yeungnam University, stated that, \"The goal of this is for mutual win-win by the university fostering excellent human resources fitting the requirements of the company, and by the company trusting in the university and employing its students.\" He also added, \"Since students majoring in Green Energy Association do not have to spend their time preparing to find a job, they will be able to devote more of their time to schoolwork.\" Meanwhile, the \'Major of Green Energy Association\' selected a total of 25 students in the 2010; students quota are 4 from the Department of Physics, 7 from the School of Mechanical Engineering Major of Mechanical Advanced Engineering, 7 from the School of Materials Science and Engineering, and 7 from the School of Display and Chemical Engineering. A special feature of this is that professors of different majors will be lecturing and providing student guidance in unison to foster experts in the \'green energy\' sector, which is yet an untouched field through fusion-convergence between different academic disciplines. Because students in the Major of Green Energy Association can acquire two diplomas at the time of their graduation, they will attain more competitive edge. This is because in this era where more than 85% of high school graduates go on to universities, one cannot be competitive with a normal diploma. In addition, new students in the \'Major of Green Energy Association\' receive full scholarships, and also the special opportunity to study abroad for a short period. Applicants for this major must be in the top 23% for language, math, foreign language, and science (average of 3 subjects).

Be confident when studying abroad. And do not hang out too much with people from your country. Just like the old saying, \'When in Rome, do as the Romans do\', when going to another country do your best to quickly adapt to the culture and people of that nation.\" A very special lecture was held at the Songam Hall at the Mechanical Engineering Hall of Yeungnam University on the 4th at 2pm. Shizhi Qian (48), who came to the School of Mechanical Engineering in September as a guest for the WCU Nano Project Team, stood on the podium for Chinese students studying abroad. Qian graduated from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, which is one of the most prestigious engineering schools in China and then acquired a PhD in the US. Qian is a Chinese person who became a successful university professor in the US. Qian has also showed vigorous research capacities in publishing 9 SCI theses just last year in the nano-particles, micro-fluids and sensors sectors, and is a world-renown scholar. In this day\'s special lecture titled \'Successfully Studying Abroad\', Professor Qian used examples of episodes that he had while studying abroad and settling down, and was more than willing to give his advice. Stating that he \"realized the meaning of the saying that ‘there is always someone on step ahead of you\' while living abroad\" and stated that he \"had no choice but to study hard since he came to a far away country with the goal of studying. That\'s why I spent many nights in a sleeping bag in the lab while being an international student.\" He emphasized that the first secret to success in studying abroad was \'diligence\'. The second secret to success while studying abroad was to \'admit what you don\'t know and not to be afraid of questioning and debating\'. He pointed out that \"Asian students have a cultural tendency not to ask questions even if there are problems that they don\'t know and that this wastes much time and effort.\" He stressed that \"questioning and debating will help make studying much more productive.\" In addition, he discussed his experience while publishing his SCI thesis and said, \"I was at first disappointed with my professor who made me edit my paper for over a year when I first published my thesis, but now I cannot be more thankful. Because of his strict guidance, I am now able to publish my SCI thesis without getting help from anybody else, and I can now teach my students as well.\" He added, that the third secret to success was \'not to dislike your strict guidance professor\'. Lastly, professor Qian also gave advice for successfully adapting to the local life. He stated, \"Though it may be human nature for people to depend upon and look for help from people with the same nationality when going abroad, but based on my experience, they are limited in the assistance they can provide because they are also foreigners.\" He one again emphasized \"not to forget the meaning of the proverbial saying of \'When in Rome, do as the Romans do\'.\" Meanwhile, there are 1,060 foreign students enrolled at Yeungnam University as of Dec 2009. From them 174 graduate students and 579 undergraduate students for a total of 929 students are from China.
